Nine

As they drove up to the Wakefield house, Elizabeth and Enid passed Jessica and Sam in Sam's car.

"Thanks for the ride home," Elizabeth said when Enid pulled into the driveway. "Do you want to come in for a while?"

"No thanks," Enid said. "Hugh and I are going to the Shining Steel concert tonight, and I'm running late."

Elizabeth shrugged and got out of her friend's car. "OK. Have fun," she called as Enid drove off. Elizabeth continued up to the front door and went inside. That was when she saw Jessica's note. "So Jessica and Sam went to the concert, too," she said aloud. "I guess everyone is having fun but me!"

She couldn't really get mad at Jessica, though. Her note also said that the requests had been sorted and were stacked on her desk, ready to go. While Elizabeth had been at school working on the yearbook, Jessica had gone to the post office, sorted the mail, made notes on the margins of the more difficult letters, and logged all of the money into their bookkeeping ledger. That was at least two hours of work. Jessica had done her part; now Elizabeth had to do hers.

"May as well get to it," she said as she stared into the refrigerator a few minutes later. She took a casserole from the freezer and popped it into the microwave oven to defrost and reheat. By the time her parents arrived home, dinner would be ready. As soon as Elizabeth had programmed all of the buttons, she grabbed an apple and a glass of milk and climbed the stairs wearily to her room.

The letters were right on her desk, stacked neatly next to her computer, just as Jessica's note had said they would be. She took a bite of her apple, turned on the computer, and picked up the first letter.
